This paper looks back on the process of writing Shirley Hazzard’s authorised biography. It considers a biographer’s interest in and access to the (open) secrets of a literary marriage, in light of questions around the remains of public and private literary lives.

Brigitta Olubas teaches in the English program at UNSW Sydney. She researches  Australian migrant and refugee writing and her authorised biography of Shirley Hazzard will be published in 2022 by Farrar Straus & Giroux in the US and Virago in Australia and the UK.
